Curating Visibility

The Curating Visibility Logo - Curating Visibility is written in purple text on a pale pink background. Surrounding the 'Cura-' part of curating is a ring of diverse shapes that seem to evolve from a pentagonal shape, through a round oval, into a triangle at the top.Co-Producers Wanted

Do you love history and museums and want to find out how stories for display are researched and chosen?

Are you passionate about telling the stories of our past, and uncovering hidden histories?

Do you have thoughts on how technology can be used to better interact with the stories and collections in our museums?

Do you identify as D/deaf, disabled or neurodiverse?

If so, we are looking for a group of around 8 people to help us interpret stories of disability from our museum’s collection, and you could be one of them!

Curating Visibility Fellow Karl Mercer - a white male in his mid-30s, dark brown hair in a side-parting, with a short beard and glasses wearing a dark shirt and jacket - is looking at a carved stone slab, a tomb marker - propped up against a white-washed brick wall. An interpretation board is between them titled "Anglo Saxon Religion" showing images of the Anglo Saxon church of St Mary in Castro.Curating Visibility Fellow Karl Mercer considers the collection at Dover Museum.

Delivered by Screen South’s pioneering Accentuate programme, and funded by Arts Council England, Curating Visibility reimagines what museums can do to share often overlooked disability narratives by exploring digital technology and multi-sensory interpretation.

Curating Visibility fellow Karl Mercer and the team at Dover Museum have been hard at work researching stories and uncovering tales from across thousands of years of Dover’s history. They have found objects and stories about smugglers, gladiators, illustrators, soldiers, channel swimmers and medieval pilgrims.

A selection of museum objects on a black background with yellow geometric lines criss-crossing it. Dover Museum's logo is in the top corner, in black on a yellow background. The objects from left-to-right are; An engraved red gemstone - the images are hard to make out but they look like two warriors in combat. A pair of swimming shorts with light fabric patterned with dark diamond shapes. The tie-up laces for the waist dangle from the front. A dark metal ornament showing Christ on the cross. Likely lead or pewter, there is a rounded shape around the top section of cross and two figures clung to the bottom. A book, the text is indecipherable but an image plate on one page shows colourful pictures of flowers.A selection of objects that we may look at. From left to right; a Roman intaglio showing a gladiatorial scene, a pair of swimming trunks, a medieval pilgrims badge, and a book with illustrations of flowers in it.

We are now looking for a group of people to help us interpret and understand these stories through their own lived experience of d/Deafness, disability or neurodiversity; and help us find the best way of telling these stories through digital technology.

Hot drinks and snacks will be made available in sessions, and we can pay for your transport to and from the museum, and assist with any additional support you may need such as a BSL interpreter. We also welcome support workers. On top of this you will be compensated for your time with a £30 voucher for each session you attend.

If you are interested in participating or simply want to find out more please fill in the form below, or email Karl (karl.mercer@dover.gov.uk) or Catherine (catherine.holt@dover.gov.uk).
