School Activity Days
School Workshops:
School Activity Days run from 10am to 2pm and comprise two one-hour workshops, a talk from a museum custodian about the Bronze Age Boat and a further hour visiting the museum galleries. We can accept two classes per day (up to 30 pupils per class) costing £220 per class (£225 from 1 April 2025).
All workshops are adaptable for SEND students and include multi-sensory resources and activities. Please contact us to discuss indivdual requirements.

Create a 3D woolly mammoth using card, colour pencils and scissors. |
Handle genuine artefacts and investigate changing technology from the early Stone Age (Paleolithic) through to the Iron Age. Periods covered include Stone Age (Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic), Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Make a 3D Bronze Age boat and fill it with goods to trade, using card, scissors, tape and colour pencils. |
Recap what came before the Bronze Age. Consider life in the Bronze Age by handling artefacts and using artefact analysis to infer what life was like in the past. |

The Roman Empire and its Impact on Britain |

Make a Roman Draco (dragon standard) using card, crepe paper, scissors and colour pencils. |
Talk and artefact investigation focussing on Romans in Britain, everyday life and what they left behind, using artefacts as clues to infer what life was like in the past. |

Britain’s Settlement by Anglo Saxons |

Discuss where the Saxons came from and why they came. Look at evidence and artefacts they left behind and what they can tell us about everyday life. |
Viking and Saxon Struggle for the Kingdom of England |

Saxons and Vikings |
Make a Viking longboat invasion fleet! Each child will make a longboat hat with oars using card, colour pencils, tape and scissors. |
Discuss when and where the Vikings came from and why they came. Look at evidence and artefacts they left behind and their impact on Britain spanning nearly 500 years. |

Tudor Life |
Inspired by the print The Embarkation of King Henry VIII at Dover 1520, children will create a 3D model of a Tudor ship from card. |
Consider what Tudor life was like via artefacts, documents and art. Discuss how travel influenced food and fashion, and some very strange laws! |
Victorian Seaside Holidays |
Younger children can make a Thaumatrope, while older pupils will make a Victorian toy peepshow using card. |
We will use artefacts and objects to inform us of the past, looking at similarities and differences between then and now. Pack a suitcase with everything you might need for a Victorian seaside holiday. |

Make a pirate hat with parrot using card. |
Fun artefact investigation workshop on being a Pirate. What can we tell about Pirates from the things they left behind? |
