Art Activity

  • Risk of injury whilst undertaking art activities
  • Pupils are told to behave in a sensible manner and to not play on the stairs if using Theatre.
  • All equipment used is supervised and any necessary training is given prior to use.
  • All equipment is child safe.
  • Children remain under control of teacher and accompanying helpers at all times.
  • Low
  • Art session will be stopped if any child seen behaving in a manner likely to cause injury to themselves or another.
  • First Aid Kit kept at museum.
  • Trained first aiders amongst museum staff.

Artefact Handling

  • Cuts or bruised toes
  • Pupils are told to pass the artefacts around carefully and be careful when handling them.
  • Artefacts are only passed around when pupils sitting sensibly.
  • Children remain under control of teacher and accompanying helpers at all times.
  • Low
  • Artefacts will not be passed to anyone not behaving properly. Any child not behaving in an appropriate manner will be asked to go and sit with the teacher.
  • Artefacts regularly checked to make sure they are safe.

Artefact Handling

  • Pupils told not to put their fingers in their mouths after handling objects.

Stairs between floors of Museum

  • Children should be supervised and told to be sensible on stairs. Children remain under control of teacher and accompanying helpers at all times.

Use of Interactives

  • Risk of injury when using interactives in galleries
  • Pupils should follow instructions for using interactives.
  • Pupil should use interactives in small groups under supervision of adult.

Toilets

  • Pupils share facilities with the general public
  • Pupils should not go to toilets without an accompanying adult from the school group.

  • If museum staff see children going to toilets on their own they should
  • send them back to their school group to get an adult to accompany them.

Moving between rooms where activities taking place

  • Risk of tripping, slipping, falling
  • Children to move around between activities sensibly in pairs. Children told not to run. Children remain under control of teacher and accompanying helpers at all times.

Getting trapped in lift

  • Risk of getting stuck in the lift
  • Children should not
  • use the lift unless accompanying an adult and another child who has to use the life e.g. in a wheelchair.

  • If museum staff see children near to lifts without an adult accompanying them they should send them back to their school group.

Break for lunch and drinks in required.

  • Hunger, dehydration and needing rest
  • Rooms are available for pupils to eat lunch in and lunch breaks are scheduled in timetable for the day. Pupils can have access to their coats and bags at any time if food or drink is need during workshops.

  • Teachers should ensure that any child who needs to keep food or drink with them does so.
  • Teachers to ensure that all pupils bring a packed lunch and drink with them if visiting for the day.

Working on lawn if hot and sunny

  • Over heating
  • Sun burn
  • Dehydration
  • Insect bites
  • Pupils only work outside for a limited amount of time.
  • Drinks to be taken with pupils if required.
  • Pupils should avoid direct contact with any insects they find.
  • Children remain under supervision of teacher and accompanying helpers at all times.

  • Outside area has shaded areas.
  • Teachers informed in advance that group may be working outside for some of the day and to ensure they have suitable drinks, sun protection and hats if required
  • Any child feeling uncomfortable can go inside with an accompanying adult from the school
  • Lawn kept regularly mowed and is regularly checked for any insect nests.

Working on Lawn
